Questions & Answers

What is family documentary photography?

Family documentary photography focuses on capturing your family as you truly are, rather than posing, directing or staging a session. I photograph real moments and connections as they unfold, whether that’s the chaos of breakfast, a game of hide and seek, or a slow afternoon at home. The result is honest, meaningful images that reflect your family’s story at this time in your life.

Do we need to pose or know what to do?

Not at all. You don’t need to perform, smile on cue, or entertain the camera. I’ll offer gentle guidance if needed, but mostly I’ll step back and let things unfold naturally. Your only job is to be together and do what you’d normally do as a family.

What if my children are shy, loud, chaotic, sensitive or emotional?

Documentary photography is especially well suited to children who don’t love being directed or told to smile. I have no expectations or judgements of their behaviour. I'll respect their need for time and space if it helps them to feel comfortable, and I'll compassionately witness any big feelings or meltdowns, as well as embrace silliness and chaos.

The more you can relax and lean into these authentic moments with your kids just as they are, the easier it will be for me to tap into the love and connection you share through my images. Having a photographer witnessing your real family life can sometimes feel vulnerable, but please know that you will always be viewed through a lens of care and understanding.

Where do sessions take place?

Sessions usually take place in your home or somewhere meaningful to your family, whether that's your backyard, the beach, a local park or another place you regularly spend time together. Familiar spaces help everyone relax and forget about the camera.

Do we need to tidy the house?

Your home doesn’t need to look a certain way to be worthy of being photographed. Lived-in spaces that are mid-mess and mid-life are part of your family’s story. I photograph thoughtfully and intentionally, without focusing on clutter.

How many images will we receive?

You’ll receive a carefully curated gallery of professionally edited, high-resolution images. Rather than working to a strict number, I focus on telling your family’s story honestly and generously.

How long does it take to receive the final images?

Your online gallery will be delivered within six weeks at a maximum, often much sooner. You’ll be able to download your images, share them, and order prints if you wish.

Do you travel beyond Phillip Island for photoshoots?

Occasionally! Depending on the distance, there may be an extra travel fee. Please reach out with details about your shoot, including the location, and I'll let you know if I can make it work.

Will you post our family's images online?

Not if you don't want me to. I will always respect your wishes around privacy. However, if you’re comfortable with me sharing your images, I’m truly grateful, as it helps to support my work. I’ll check in when you book, and if I take any especially vulnerable images during our session, I'll reach out to make sure you're comfortable before I post them.

Do you do other types of photography, such as business branding, birth photography or weddings?

Sometimes! Please reach out if you have a particular job in mind. The more details you can provide, the better! If we're a good fit for each other, I'll send you a customised quote and we can go from there.
